The Reliable All-Rounder For Metal Thickness Measurement

Cygnus Instruments is a UK leader in Digital Ultrasonic Testing Equipment, which are renowned for ease-of-use, reliability and accuracy for corrosion inspection, flooded member detection, and leak detection of marine structures and vessels of all sizes. Cygnus was born in the marine industry, working alongside ship surveyors and commercial divers to this day. Now over four decades on, their knowledge of the industry and its challenges is second to none.

The Cygnus Surface Range is built for inspecting possible corrosion onboard vessels, and to combat the challenges this presents. These lightweight, compact, hands-free gauges are shatter-proof and water-resistant (IP67) making them highly practical in a range of conditions. Plus, twin-crystal and right-angle probes increase flexibility for tight, awkward spaces.

Corrosion is a critical threat to the structural integrity of ships and offshore structures. These structures are constantly exposed to moisture in the air and salt water, which are known to cause and accelerate corrosion. To mitigate this, marine vessels and structures are often coated with protective coatings, which in turn present obstacles to corrosion monitoring and inspection. However, thanks to Cygnus’ Multiple-Echo technology, users can measure through coatings (as specified by Classification Societies), eliminating the time and cost of removing anti-corrosive coatings.

Cygnus 4+ - a reliable all-rounder

Cygnus 4+ is an exceptionally tough and versatile thickness gauge built for a wide range of applications. Its 3 measuring modes allow for measurement on surfaces with no, moderate, or heavy corrosion, as well as those with no, thin, or thick coatings. Additionally, the gauge’s Deep Coat function can ignore coatings up to 20mm thick.

This flexibility and ease of use are also apparent when viewing and managing results. It features a highly intuitive menu and a large colour display, enabling users to view clearly and record thickness readings and live A-scans. A-scan (a visual representation of the ultrasound in the material) is especially useful for verifying readings. To further reassure users’ confidence in each result, Cygnus’ Measurement Stability Indicator (in Single Eco or Echo Eco mode) quickly confirms stable, reliable measurements by changing the reading’s colour from red to green, allowing users to proceed to the next measurement without hesitation. Finally, the gauge offers sequential data-logging, including an auto-log feature for maximum speed and convenience, and ensures seamless data transfer to a computer for detailed reporting and analysis.

It’s easy to see why the Cygnus 4+ is an excellent asset to marine inspectors and ship surveyors.

All Cygnus gauges have a 3-year warranty.
