Marine Specialist, Dales Marine Is Committed in Developing Its Workforce and Providing Outstanding Support Services to the UK Maritime Industry
Dales Marine is one of Scotland’s largest ship repair companies, providing essential support services to the many vessels operating in the region. Its commitment to new and old customers is one of the many reasons they are relied on to deliver vessel support services.
Dales Marine has serviced the UK maritime sector for over 30 years, supporting oil and gas, aquaculture, defence, commercial and, more recently, renewables sector. Strategically located in Scotland’s northeast and west coast, including Aberdeen, Leith, Greenock, Troon and Grangemouth, Dales Marine delivers its services across Scotland, northeast England, and when required, the rest of the UK with 24/7, 365 days a year support.
To provide this unrivalled service, Dales Marine needs the people and skills to repair and maintain its clients’ fleets. It is common knowledge that the UK currently faces skill shortages in shipbuilding, engineering and repair, and Dales Marine is the same.
To maintain the skills and enthusiasm for this industry, Dales Marine is committed to developing young workers, working closely with local schools and colleges to inspire pupils to consider entering the maritime/ship repair industry as a future career.
Dales Marines has thirty-eight apprentices across their dry dock sites in Aberdeen, Leith, and Greenock; these include Mechanical Engineers, Steelworkers/ Fabricators, Painters and Electricians.
Mark Massie, Dales Marine QHSE Manager, said: “Our Apprenticeship scheme offers young people a thorough programme, with the promise of a full-time position at the end of the apprenticeship training and is always popular. Every year we are inundated with applicants for our available positions. Apprentices work alongside qualified tradespersons and see them working on various projects throughout their apprenticeship.”
There are many benefits of having an apprenticeship scheme within the business, developing young workers, supporting the local community with jobs, handing on skills to the next generation and maintaining a solid workforce at each of the Dales Marine’s dry dock facilities.
Mark Massie continued: “We’ve been running apprenticeship programmes since 1990; I also trained as an apprentice at Dales Marine. We hope that most of our apprentices will stay with the company upon completing their four years with us. However, quite a high proportion stay on with the offer of full-time and opportunities for career progressions to chargehands, foremen and management positions within the company when available.”
The services delivered by Dales Marine’s skilled and dedicated staff mean clients benefit from a 24/7 on-call service, where they can access the operations team directly and regularly. In addition, clients benefit from 30 years of experience, which has seen most maritime challenges and solutions delivered to get vessels operational again.
Dales Marine can cover and arrange for any repairs on board a vessel, either in-house or through its specialist third parties, with the ability to provide turnkey projects and project management of the works, reassuring its clients that the work will be done to a high standard, and helps to reduce the pressure by not having to coordinate multiple contractors.
