James Cameron’s Deep Sea Challenger – Assisted by Subsalve

Subsalve is the worldwide leader and innovator in the design and manufacture of engineered inflatables. Their underwater lift bags are specified to meet the toughest challenges in recreational, commercial, scientific, and military applications. Since 1977, Subsalve have provided solutions and expertise for aircraft recovery, ship, yacht, and boat salvage, marine construction, offshore oilfield diving, and explosive ordnance disposal.

This month represents a decade since the Deepsea Challengers record breaking dive.

Challenge

In preparing for a record breaking dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, James Cameron approached Subsalve the help with two key problems. The first was to maintain safe positioning of the submersible during launch and retrieval operation and the second was to develop a back-up system to return to the surface should primary systems fail.

Solution

Subsalve provided standard products to aid in the launch and retrieval. They developed, together with the Challenger team, a self contained emergency buoyancy system that included a custom pontoon and a specialized inflation source. As space was limited the inflation source was packaged in a confined space on the submersible.

Outcome

On March 26th, 2012 the Deepsea Challenger, piloted by James Cameron, achieved touch down in the Mariana Trench at a depth of 35,736 feet and safely returned to the surface.

This is why subsalve is considered a world leader and innovator in its field.
