SD Independent Docks at Trafalgar Shipyard Portsmouth for Routine Maintenance

Serco’s SD Independent docked on the 5th July at Trafalgar Shipyard, Portsmouth to undergo her routine 10-year special survey and scheduled maintenance.

Chris Hems, Shipyard Manager said, “We are pleased to be supporting I.M.E. Group Ltd. the prime contractor for Serco with the docking of this Damen ASD Tug 2509.”

“Along with the usual Class approval maintenance and checks, this year requires the main thrusters to be overhauled, along with the bow thruster unit. Each area required its own specialist ‘Makers Man’ engineer to be present and with the assistance from I.M.E. carry out the required works.

"The main thrusters overhaul is overseen by Stone Marine Services and the bow thruster is by ZF Services UK Ltd.

"Each specialist service is contracted direct by Serco, and working closely with the prime contractor I.M.E. Group Ltd. gives the customer complete control over their project.”

“In this docking SD Independent was positioned at 2pm and safely lifted by 3.30pm, showing the speed of the Syncrolift system. Ready to work with full shore power and safe access within 90 minutes.

“With the maintenance period completed, the SD Independent was launched and quickly back in to service. With the excellent teamwork along with assistance from the Trafalgar Shipyard, we are maintaining our reputation as a flexible and friendly yard, and look forward to welcoming more Serco vessels over the coming months.”

Retaining Portsmouth’s maritime heritage

The Shipyard is based on the former Vosper Thorneycroft site at Trafalgar Wharf and Royal Navy vessels have been maintained here for many years. So, they are proud to be continuing a long heritage of ship work and marine employment within Portsmouth Harbour.

With the Royal Naval Dockyard based in Portsmouth Harbour too, there is a fully secured and monitored approach, which continues beyond the dockyard to the shipyard channel.

Commercial Shiplift

Lifting your vessel is facilitated using their Rolls Royce Syncrolift, their fully refurbished commercial Shiplift. Certified to lift 877 tonnes, it easily lifts vessels up to 60 metres in length overall.

The mechanical dry-dock will hoist out most large vessels ready for repairs, repainting and maintenance. The Shiplift uses a moveable rail system enabling dry docking of multiple vessels on the wide, level hardstanding. Giving full all-round access for cleaning, maintenance and painting.

Manage your own refit project

They have set up Trafalgar Shipyard to offer modern, customer-focused yard services. They supply the lifting service and infrastructure, which includes project offices, equipment storage and welfare facilities. All available to hire as required for the duration of your project.

You can appoint your own contractors and run your own refit project from the Shipyard. You have complete control who you commission to work on your vessel. Which means you can get your job done at the most competitive rate, using your preferred suppliers. Plus, they can introduce reliable local contractors and marine services, should you need them.
