Glamox has supplied a variety of energy efficient lighting solutions to three new car ferries that operate between the two towns of Horten and Moss in the south east of Norway.
The three new car ferries, which are owned and operated by shipping company Bastø Fosen, can carry up to 200 cars and between 24-30 trailers each. The vessels are equipped with energy-efficient diesel engines. Bastø Fosen’s own calculations have shown that the NOx emissions for the three new car ferries will be reduced by more than 80 per cent compared to its existing ferries. In addition, a newly developed, energy efficient hull will reduce fuel consumption by 25 to 30 per cent compared to today’s vessels.
The lighting solutions provided by Glamox comprise high quality LED luminaires that will help reduce the vessels’ carbon footprints even further. The watertight TL60 LED luminaries, for example, are installed in car decks and other areas of the ships that are exposed to the elements. Due to its extremely long operating life (up to 50,000 hours), the TL60 LED is designed to meet maritime requirements and to minimise energy and maintenance costs. The combination of an innovative lighting design and use of high quality components and materials ensures excellent heat management and a reliable, long operating life.
LED lighting solutions
Other LED lighting solutions supplied by Glamox for the three ferries include the DL60-RF155 LED series of downlights. Installed as interior lighting throughout the three vessels, these modern, slim downlights with built-in LEDs are direct replacements for halogen and compact fluorescent tubes. The IP55 protected, under-ceiling downlights are designed to provide maximum light quality with better colour rendering than fluorescent and halogen lighting. All DL60 components are custom engineered to work optimally together in order to provide maximum light output and minimum glare. Compared to halogen lighting solutions, the DL60 can reduce energy consumption by up to 80% with the same light level. The downlights are easy to install and are available in a wide range of trims and decors.
Glamox also supplied its FL40 LED series of high performance LED safe area floodlights. These attractively designed floodlights provide instantaneous, high intensity light and are immune to voltage drops. As well as offering excellent heat management, the floodlights have a life expectancy of up to 50,000 hours, low energy consumption and are virtually maintenance-free.
The three car ferries are also equipped with Series 65 LED navigation lights from Glamox, as well as its 1771 LED range of flat-designed luminaires for freezing and cold rooms, and its Flecto W series of interior decorative wall lamps for incandescent and compact fluorescent lamps (for cabins and communal areas of the ships).
