Matrix delivers training for Aberdeen Harbour staff

Trainers from an Aberdeen-based risk management specialist are working closely with Aberdeen Harbour to further strengthen the organisation’s incident investigation capabilities.

Over the remaining months of 2017, nine Aberdeen Harbour operational staff will attend Matrix Risk Control’s two-day incident investigation toolkit training at nearby Waterloo Quay. The course, which is unique to Matrix Risk Control (Matrix) and is delivered to organisations worldwide, holds approval from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

Over the two-day duration of their training, Aberdeen Harbour representatives will further develop the evidence-gathering skills required to perform a structured and thorough investigation into any safety, environmental, equipment failure or quality-related incident. Research indicates that the root causes of minor incidents are often identical to more serious ones. A robust organisational approach to incident investigation can help, therefore, to safeguard organisations from major accidents.

The Matrix incident investigation toolkit course is structured around an operational scenario to provide delegates with as realistic an experience as possible. Its core elements include scene management, personnel profiling and conducting witness interviews. The training culminates with an assessment and, for successful delegates, a certificate of attainment.

Alan Smith, operations director, Matrix Risk Control said: “It is hugely encouraging to see organisations such as Aberdeen Harbour placing a high importance on incident recording and investigation.

“Treating near-misses and minor incidents as opportunities to learn and improve is a vital part of an organisation’s health and safety culture. A growing demand for our incident investigation training, both domestically and overseas, suggests that there is an increasing awareness of its importance.”

Malcolm Brown, compliance manager, Aberdeen Harbour said: “Participation in Matrix’s two-day programme underlines Aberdeen Harbour’s commitment to further strengthening our investigative capabilities – and indeed to providing our stakeholders with the highest levels of support.

“We feel strongly that working safely is the responsibility of all, hence our decision to train a number of staff across the organisation.”

Matrix Risk Control was established by former senior police officers in 2009. The company, which is headquartered in Aberdeen, provides training and support services to help organisations manage many major forms of operational risk. Its 15-strong team conducts independent investigations worldwide and works across a variety of industry sectors to provide incident investigation training courses and management services. Matrix’s incident investigation toolkit courses are IOSH-approved and are delivered by its own IOSH-certified instructors. For further information go to: www.matrixriskcontrol.com
